What Is VMware Fusion?

VMware Fusion is a desktop hypervisor for macOS. It allows users to create and run virtual machines that have their own virtual CPU, memory, storage, and network configuration. This makes it possible to run supported guest operating systems alongside macOS without rebooting the physical Mac.

Fusion is used by developers, IT professionals, students, and lab administrators who need to test software, practice operating-system administration, reproduce issues, or maintain separate computing environments on one computer.

Key Features of VMware Fusion 25H2

Run Virtual Machines

Create virtual machines for supported Windows and Linux operating systems, subject to host CPU architecture and guest compatibility.

Virtual Networking

Connect virtual machines through supported virtual networking modes to build isolated lab environments and test network configurations.

Snapshots and Clones

Use snapshots and, where supported by the edition, clones to support testing and repeatable lab workflows.

dictTool Configuration Utility

Fusion 25H2 adds dictTool, a command-line utility for inspecting and editing supported virtual-machine configuration files and preferences.

USB 3.2 Support

The release adds USB 3.2 support for improved compatibility with modern USB devices.

Hardware Version 22

Support for virtual hardware version 22 helps virtual machines use the capabilities exposed by this generation of VMware virtual hardware.

Remote and Automation Workflows

Available management and automation interfaces include tools such as vmrun and the REST API, with feature availability depending on platform and configuration.

Updated OS Compatibility

25H2 expands support for newer host and guest operating systems, including macOS Tahoe as a qualified Fusion host.

System Requirements and Compatibility

VMware Fusion 25H2 is designed for compatible Macs. Before installing it, verify the host operating system, CPU architecture, available storage, memory, and requirements for the guest OS you plan to run.

RequirementDetails
Host platformApple Mac computer
Host operating systemFusion 25H2 is qualified for macOS Sequoia 15 and macOS Tahoe 26; verify the current compatibility documentation before installing.
CPU architectureIntel-based Macs and Apple silicon Macs, with different guest architecture support.
MemoryEnough physical RAM for macOS and the planned guest operating systems. Requirements depend on the workload.
StorageFree space for the application, virtual disks, snapshots, and guest operating-system files.
Guest operating systemsSupported x86 guests on Intel Macs and ARM64/AArch64 guests on Apple silicon, subject to Fusion compatibility.
Installation permissionsA macOS account with permission to install applications and approve required system settings.
Apple silicon compatibility: Fusion virtualizes the guest architecture rather than emulating an arbitrary CPU architecture. On Apple silicon, use supported ARM64/AArch64 guest operating systems. You cannot use Fusion on an Apple silicon Mac to run an ordinary x86 operating-system guest in the same way as on an Intel Mac.

VMware Fusion 25H2 on Intel vs Apple Silicon

Fusion has different capabilities depending on whether your Mac uses an Intel processor or Apple silicon. The choice affects which guest operating systems you can run and which integration features are available.

  6. Review licensing. Follow the licensing screen and select the applicable permitted-use option. Check Broadcom’s current terms for details.
  7. Create a virtual machine. Select an installation image for a supported guest operating system and configure virtual CPU, memory, disk, and network settings.
  8. Install the guest OS. Start the virtual machine and complete the guest operating-system setup.
  9. Test the VM. Verify networking, display behavior, and other required integrations before using the VM for important work.

Important Download and Security Guidance

  • Use official Broadcom downloads whenever possible, especially for business or production environments.
  • Check the file type and its digital signature or notarization status where applicable before installation.
  • Do not bypass macOS security warnings for an installer whose origin you cannot verify.
  • Keep Fusion and guest operating systems updated with relevant security fixes.
  • Back up important virtual machines before upgrading the hypervisor or changing virtual hardware compatibility.
Version advisory: VMware Fusion 26H1 supersedes 25H2 as the newer release line. Broadcom has also published security updates addressing vulnerabilities affecting earlier desktop hypervisor releases. If you need Fusion for everyday or production use, check Broadcom’s current security advisories and install a supported, patched version rather than relying on an older package.
