AerynOS, an atomic-update-based Linux distribution currently in alpha development, has released its March 2026 project update along with a new Alpha ISO, AerynOS 2026.03, powered by the Linux kernel 6.18 LTS.

While the update may appear modest at first glance, the development team has been focusing on strengthening internal tools, infrastructure, and preparing for larger upcoming changes. The release includes several updated core components such as GNOME 50, KDE Plasma 6.6.3, LLVM 22.1.1, Wayland 1.25, Qt 6.11, FFmpeg 8.1, and Mesa 26.

The project remains under a soft repository freeze, which restricts the addition of new packages but still permits updates that don’t require extensive rebuilds.

For desktop users, GNOME 50 introduces enhanced parental controls, stable support for variable refresh rates, and enables fractional scaling by default. It also operates exclusively on a Wayland session. Meanwhile, KDE Plasma 6.6.3 brings improvements such as more reliable screencasting via PipeWire, reduced resource usage during fullscreen tasks, and better handling of high-resolution scrolling devices.

In Wayland-based environments, the default terminal for the Sway compositor has been switched from Alacritty to Foot, aligning with upstream decisions.

Additionally, the moss package manager now supports searching by binary provider, allowing users to identify which package contains a specific executable. It also enables the removal of multiple system states simultaneously, simplifying management for systems with numerous stored states.

On the build side, Boulder now introduces support for control files, making it easier to manage large-scale changes. These files allow maintainers to skip or modify specific build steps—such as test phases—without altering individual package recipes. Future plans include upgrading the Python toolchain and rebuilding the entire repository, which currently consists of around 1,500 packages.

For those interested in testing, the AerynOS 2026.03 Alpha ISO is available for download. However, it is intended strictly for evaluation and not for production use.

Users should also note that AerynOS does not include a graphical installer. Instead, the ISO provides a GNOME live environment, and installation is performed via the terminal using the Rust-based Lichen installer. Before starting the installation, users must manually create the required disk partitions.
