Firefox 148 Now Available for Download, Here’s What’s New

One month after shipping version 147, Mozilla Firefox 148 has arrived, bringing a range of new features and improvements to the widely used open-source browser.
Centralized AI Controls
The headline addition is a new AI Controls section in Settings. This dedicated panel provides users with a clear, centralized way to manage — or completely disable — AI-powered features within the browser.
A prominent “Block AI enhancements” toggle allows users to turn off both current and future AI capabilities. AI features are blocked by default, but individual tools can be enabled selectively. Mozilla notes that additional AI-related controls will be introduced in upcoming releases.
The AI Controls menu brings together all related functionality in one place, covering both on-device AI features and sidebar integrations with external chatbot services. Users can manage:
- On-device AI tools that download small local models for improved privacy
- AI-generated image alt text in the built-in PDF viewer
- Automatic tab group naming suggestions
- Key-point summaries in link previews
- Sidebar chatbot integrations, including Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral
Accessibility and Platform Improvements
Firefox 148 enhances screen reader support for mathematical formulas in PDFs, improving accessibility for users who rely on assistive technologies.
On Android, the browser introduces a refreshed toolbar design with a more modern appearance and improved customization options. A new “Copy link text” option has also been added to the context menu.
Developer-Focused Enhancements
For web developers, Firefox 148 adds support for the Trusted Types API and the Sanitizer API, both aimed at strengthening defenses against cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.
Availability
Users who want the update immediately can download it directly from Mozilla’s servers. Windows and macOS users will receive the update automatically over the air in the coming days, while Linux users can expect Firefox 148 to appear in their distribution repositories shortly.
