Oracle Releases Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel 8.2 Based on Linux 6.12 LTS

Oracle has introduced Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) 8.2, a high-performance kernel for Oracle Linux built on the Linux 6.12 LTS release. This update brings notable improvements in confidential computing, file system reliability, and memory management.

One of the standout features is support for Intel Trust Domain Extensions (TDX), which enables confidential computing by allowing virtual machines to operate within isolated, hardware-encrypted environments. UEK 8.2 includes both guest and hypervisor support for TDX on Oracle Linux 9 and 10, although outside Oracle Cloud Infrastructure it is currently offered as a technology preview.

File system reliability has also been enhanced with the introduction of XFS online repair. This allows administrators to inspect and fix XFS file systems without unmounting them. Using the xfs_scrub utility, metadata can be validated and selectively repaired while the system remains online, minimizing downtime.

In terms of memory management, the release adds lightweight guard pages that help detect invalid memory access by triggering segmentation faults, while using fewer resources than traditional methods. This is particularly beneficial for systems running large numbers of processes or threads, as it reduces overall memory overhead.

Additionally, UEK 8.2 introduces memory allocation profiling, giving administrators better visibility into how memory is allocated and freed. This makes it easier to analyze usage patterns and identify potential memory leaks.

The kernel also includes updated device drivers aligned with upstream Linux development, along with continuous integration of bug fixes and security patches to maintain stability and protection against vulnerabilities.

UEK 8.2 adopts the upstream Linux kernel versioning scheme, which may impact applications that depend on parsing kernel version numbers, although most standard Linux applications should continue to work without issues.

For Arm-based systems, a variant with 64K memory pages is now available. This configuration is currently limited to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Arm instances and is considered a technical preview in other environments.

Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel 8.2 is available through the Oracle Linux repositories for supported versions, including Oracle Linux 9 and 10.
