Tails 7.6 has been released, bringing a new update to the privacy-focused Linux distribution that routes all internet traffic through the Tor network. One of the most significant additions in this version is built-in support for automatic Tor bridges.

With this feature, users can now request working Tor bridges directly through the Tor Connection assistant. When attempting to connect, Tails can detect if access to the Tor network is restricted and will prompt users to retrieve bridges based on their location. These bridges help mask Tor usage, enabling connections even on networks where Tor is blocked.

This functionality is powered by the Tor Project’s Moat API and leverages domain fronting techniques to conceal the request process.

Another major change in Tails 7.6 is the switch from KeePassXC to GNOME Secrets as the default password manager. Since both applications use the same database format, users can continue accessing their existing KeePassXC password files without any additional steps.

GNOME Secrets also integrates more seamlessly with the GNOME desktop environment and restores compatibility with accessibility features such as the on-screen keyboard and cursor scaling. For users who require more advanced features, KeePassXC can still be installed manually.

The update also brings newer versions of key applications. Tor Browser has been upgraded to 15.0.8, Thunderbird to version 140.8, and Electrum to 4.7. Additionally, updated firmware packages improve compatibility with newer hardware, including graphics cards and wireless adapters.

Several bugs and usability issues have been resolved as well. Fixes include properly translated confirmation dialogs for language and keyboard settings, a non-functional “Learn More” button in Thunderbird migration notifications, and issues affecting automated upgrades for Turkish users.

For users already running Tails 7.0 or later, automatic upgrades to version 7.6 are supported while preserving Persistent Storage data. If automatic updates fail or the system encounters boot issues, a manual upgrade option is still available.
