TrueNAS Responds to Community Concerns With New Community and Enterprise Vision

After discussions within the community about shifting the TrueNAS build infrastructure to internal systems, iXsystems released a blog post titled “Building a Bridge Between Community & Enterprise.” In the post, the company explains its broader strategy and introduces a new platform called TrueNAS Connect.
According to iXsystems, the intention is to strengthen the connection between the Community Edition of TrueNAS and the enterprise-level features that have typically been available only on official TrueNAS hardware appliances.
TrueNAS Connect is designed as a centralized service that helps manage licensing and unlock additional capabilities. Through this platform, users will gain access to features such as remote system monitoring, centralized administration, proactive alerting, and other tools commonly used in enterprise storage environments.
The company stresses that the underlying platform will remain open source and that the Community Edition will continue to be freely available. Users will still be able to download and run TrueNAS on their own hardware without restrictions.
However, the new platform introduces a structured way to access more advanced functionality. TrueNAS Connect will be offered in several tiers, beginning with a free Foundation level and expanding to paid plans that provide enhanced enterprise features.
In its announcement, iXsystems also clarified its business strategy. The company follows an open-core model, where the base software remains open source while premium services and enterprise capabilities are offered commercially. This approach, according to the company, helps fund ongoing development while keeping the core platform available to the community.
In short, users of the Community Edition should not see changes to their core experience. TrueNAS will continue to deliver its established ZFS-based storage platform, while the new service provides optional enterprise tools for those who need them.
