SparkyLinux 2026.03 Tiamat Released Based on Debian Testing Forky
22views

The SparkyLinux project has introduced refreshed installation images for its semi-rolling edition with the release of SparkyLinux 2026.03, code-named “Tiamat.” The new images are built on Debian Testing (currently “Forky”) and include the latest software updates available in both Debian and Sparky repositories as of March 14, 2026.

Semi-Rolling Model Means No Reinstallation Required

Because SparkyLinux follows a semi-rolling release model, this update mainly refreshes the installation media rather than introducing a completely new system version. Users who already run the rolling edition do not need to reinstall their systems. Simply updating the system packages will bring installations in line with the latest release.

Updated Kernel and System Components

The default kernel included in the new images is Linux kernel 6.19.6. Users who prefer different versions can install alternatives directly from Sparky’s repositories. Available options include:

  • Kernel 7.0-rc3
  • Kernel 6.19.8
  • Kernel 6.18.18-LTS
  • Kernel 6.12.77-LTS

Updated Applications

The release ships with several updated applications, including:

  • Mozilla Firefox 140.8.0 ESR
  • Mozilla Thunderbird 140.8.0 ESR

Users who prefer a newer browser version can install Firefox 148 from the Sparky repositories.

Other important components included in the release are:

  • Calamares 3.4.2 graphical installer
  • Updated GCC 15 and GCC 16 base toolchains for development

Improvements to the Installer

The command-line installation tool, sparky-installer, now provides an option to install the 32-bit ia32 version of GRUB UEFI on 64-bit systems when needed.

Meanwhile, the graphical Calamares installer technically allows users to set a single-character password during installation. However, the developers strongly recommend choosing a secure password between 8 and 12 characters for better system protection.

Installation Notes

According to the developers, installing SparkyLinux on UEFI-based systems requires an active internet connection. In these cases, using the Calamares graphical installer is the recommended approach.

For older hardware equipped with a 64-bit CPU and either BIOS or UEFI firmware, installation can also be performed through the command-line installer using:

sudo sparky-installer
