Free VPN and Split View Are Coming to Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla is working on upcoming updates to Mozilla Firefox that aim to strengthen privacy protections and improve multitasking capabilities. Two of the most notable additions are a browser-integrated VPN and a new Split View feature.
The built-in VPN operates directly within the browser, routing web traffic through a proxy to mask the user’s IP address and location. Mozilla emphasizes that this approach reflects its privacy-first philosophy, avoiding the compromises often associated with ad-supported or data-collecting VPN services. Initially, the feature will provide up to 50GB of monthly usage and will be introduced in select regions such as the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
It’s important to note that this VPN is limited to browser activity only, meaning it secures traffic within Firefox rather than protecting the entire system.
In addition to privacy enhancements, Firefox is also introducing Split View, a highly requested feature designed to boost productivity. This functionality allows users to display two web pages side by side within a single window, making it easier to compare information, copy content, or work across multiple pages without constantly switching tabs.
Split View has been tested in experimental builds and is expected to become available in the stable release with Firefox 149. The feature integrates seamlessly with the tab system, enabling users to arrange tabs next to each other and resize them as needed.
Beyond these headline features, upcoming updates will also include a redesigned Settings interface with improved navigation and search capabilities. A new Smart Window feature is being added as well, offering optional AI-powered summaries and contextual assistance directly within the browser. Additionally, Tab Notes—available through Firefox Labs—will allow users to attach notes to individual tabs for better organization.
Mozilla is also refreshing the overall look and feel of Firefox, introducing updated icons, menus, and themes. As part of this redesign effort, a new mascot named Kit will be introduced to modernize the browser’s visual identity and enhance user experience.
