At a glance: BleachBit 6.0.6 improves startup, deep scans, deletion, and secure file wiping. It adds cleaners for the Helium browser and Docker Desktop, expands cleanup for Claude Code and VS Code-based editors, and fixes configuration-permission problems that affected some elevated runs.

What is BleachBit?

BleachBit is a free, open-source system-cleaning and privacy utility. It can remove selected caches, temporary files, logs, browser traces, and other application data to reclaim disk space and reduce retained local information. It is available for Windows and Linux, with macOS support continuing to expand.

BleachBit 6.0.6 is a maintenance release published on October 17, 2026. The official project notes describe performance work, new cleaners, broader application cleanup, and fixes across supported platforms.

What is new in BleachBit 6.0.6?

Faster startup and scanning

The release delays loading selected modules until they are needed, streamlines cleaner-list processing, and optimizes deep-scan path handling. Other changes reduce unnecessary initialization and background work during startup.

Faster file wiping

File contents are now wiped in 512 KiB blocks instead of 4 KiB blocks, reducing per-operation overhead. The project describes this as a performance improvement; it is not a guarantee that every storage device will wipe at a fixed speed.

Helium and Docker Desktop cleaners

New cleaners cover the Helium browser and Docker Desktop on Windows, Linux, and macOS, including an option for data associated with Docker’s AI assistant.

More application cleanup

The update expands removal of crash reports, GPU caches, and network-state files for Chromium-based browsers, Zen, and VS Code-based editors. Claude Code cleanup also covers more cache and session files.

Platform-specific fixes

PlatformImportant changesWhy it matters
WindowsRepairs affected configuration-folder permissions, fixes settings that failed to save after running as administrator, improves FAT32 wiping, and disables executable compression.Addresses configuration problems affecting earlier versions and reduces some antivirus false positives. The uncompressed installed footprint increases by about 22 MB according to the release notes.
LinuxCorrects configuration ownership when using sudo, updates the administrator launcher on Fedora and other Red Hat-based systems to use pkexec, and improves Snap and LibreWolf cleanup.Helps prevent settings and cookie keep-list ownership problems and improves the administrator-launch workflow.
macOSExpands cleaners for Adobe Acrobat, Devin, GIMP, Google Earth, TeamViewer, Visual Studio Code, VLC, Zen, and Zoom, plus translation and language-detection fixes.Broadens application cleanup and improves localization when the app is launched from Finder.
All platformsFixes language selection, preferences lost when quitting with a keyboard shortcut, CD-ROM wiping freezes, and crashes near the end of wiping in Arabic and Hebrew environments.Improves reliability and consistency across common workflows.

Linux configuration fix for elevated runs

The official release notes say BleachBit 6.0.1 through 6.0.5 could create configuration files with incorrect ownership when launched with sudo. This could stop settings from being saved when the same user later launched BleachBit normally.

For affected Linux users, the maintainers document this repair command:

sudo chown -R "$USER" ~/.config/bleachbit
Use care with elevated privileges: Run the command only for your own BleachBit configuration directory, and inspect the path before changing ownership. Do not run broad recursive ownership changes against system directories.

Secure file wiping: what users should understand

BleachBit distinguishes ordinary cleanup from wiping file contents. The 6.0.6 release improves wiping speed by changing the block size used when overwriting file contents. That is a performance change, not a universal guarantee of forensic unrecoverability.

Results depend on the storage medium and its behavior. SSD wear-leveling, copy-on-write filesystems, snapshots, backups, journaling, and cloud-synced copies can leave data outside the exact file blocks being wiped. If you need to dispose of sensitive data, use a storage-appropriate sanitization process and follow your organization’s retention and security policy.

  • Windows: Use the official Windows installer or portable package listed by the project.
  • Linux: Prefer your distribution’s supported package where available. The release notes specifically mention a DEB package for Ubuntu 26.10; package availability varies by distribution.
  • macOS: Use the package provided through the official project download page and review the current macOS support notes.

Upgrade recommendations

  • Close applications whose caches or session data you plan to clean.
  • Review the Preview results and selected cleaner options before deleting data.
  • Do not assume every checked item is disposable; browser sessions, caches, and application data may affect convenience or recovery.
  • On Linux, review ownership and permissions if you previously ran BleachBit with sudo.
  • For business systems, test cleaning policies on a non-critical machine before rolling them out widely.

VMoreCloud verdict

BleachBit 6.0.6 is a practical maintenance update rather than a complete redesign. The most notable changes are faster startup and wiping, new Helium and Docker Desktop cleaners, broader application cleanup, and fixes for configuration permissions on Windows and Linux. Users who rely on BleachBit should review the official notes and update through a trusted distribution or vendor source.
