Calibre 9.8 E-Book Manager Adds Local OpenAI-Compatible AI Provider Support

Calibre 9.8 has been released, bringing a range of improvements across its content server, ebook editor, AI features, text-to-speech system, and bundled news sources.

A major highlight is expanded AI integration. Calibre now supports any local provider that offers an OpenAI-compatible interface, giving users more flexibility to connect with locally hosted AI tools. It also improves reliability by preserving conversation context when errors occur during AI interactions—particularly useful for experimental or self-hosted setups.

The content server has been refined for better mobile usability. In the /mobile view, users can now tap on book titles and covers to quickly open detailed pages, making navigation smoother on smartphones and smaller screens.

Updates to the ebook editor include a simple way to reset the preview zoom level back to 100% via a right-click in the preview pane. On macOS Tahoe, the app icon now automatically switches to a darker variant when the system is in dark mode.

Several bug fixes are included as well. The built-in text-to-speech engine now normalizes text using NFKC, improving word tracking when dealing with different Unicode formats. There’s also a fix for a PIL-related issue that could trigger errors when converting GIF images to PNG during animation checks.

Lastly, Calibre 9.8 refreshes its built-in news sources, with updates for outlets like Hacker News, The Atlantic, Scientific American, Mediapart, and The Hindu.

The update is available now for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with full details outlined in the changelog.
