KDE Plasma 6.7 Will Add Per-Screen Virtual Desktops and Wayland Session Restore

KDE developers have shared new progress updates on KDE Plasma 6.7, including a long-awaited improvement for multi-monitor users. Virtual desktops will now work independently on each display, allowing users to switch desktops on one screen without affecting others—something that previously wasn’t possible.
Another major enhancement is in KWin’s Wayland session handling, which now implements the Wayland session management protocol. This lays the groundwork for restoring application states after a restart, meaning apps will eventually remember their size and screen position between sessions. While full functionality still depends on support from toolkits and applications, the core compositor-side implementation is now in place.
Plasma 6.7 also introduces several user-focused improvements. Users will be able to choose a default calendar application in System Settings, and the Digital Clock widget will support a middle-click action to launch it. Additionally, the Alt+Tab window switcher can now be configured to always appear on the primary display instead of following cursor or keyboard focus.
The application launcher experience is also getting refinements. Users can mark search-based app actions as favorites, newly installed apps will be highlighted in the Kicker menu, and applications can be dragged directly into Favorites across Kickoff, Kicker, and Dashboard launchers.
The Discover software center gains an option to automatically close after completing updates, along with redesigned grid and list layouts for better information density. Kicker will also display tooltips for truncated labels.
In System Monitor, GPUs will now be identified by their actual names rather than generic numbering, and users can access top-level navigation actions via context menus or shortcuts.
This release also addresses various bugs and usability issues, including problems with the Audio Volume widget detecting new default devices, restoring app arrangement in the Quick Launch widget, clipboard behavior when non-text history is disabled, and improvements to Spectacle’s magnifier in rectangular selection mode.
