MX Linux 25.3 “Infinity” Released with Debian 13.7 Updates

MX Linux 25.3 “Infinity” is now available with refreshed installation images, Debian 13.7 updates, updated Linux kernels, and improvements to the distribution’s custom tools. The release also brings graphics-stack updates for Advanced Hardware Support editions and new utilities for desktop customization and ISO verification.

Release: MX Linux 25.3 Codename: Infinity Base: Debian 13.7 Release date: September 20, 2026

The MX Linux project has published version 25.3 as a maintenance update in its MX-25 “Infinity” series. Rather than introducing an entirely new major release, this version refreshes installation media with accumulated Debian and MX repository updates and includes improvements to selected applications and utilities.

The release is relevant to users planning a fresh installation, particularly those who want installation media containing newer packages. Existing MX Linux 25 users generally do not need to reinstall: the project says the updates are also distributed through the regular package repositories.

What’s New in MX Linux 25.3?

Debian 13.7 Updates

The new images include updates from Debian 13.7, the Debian 13 “Trixie” point release, together with updates published through the MX repositories since the previous official ISO release.

Updated Linux Kernels

Most editions use the Linux 6.12 kernel series. The Xfce AHS edition instead includes a Liquorix 7.2 kernel for users targeting newer hardware.

Updated Graphics Stack

AHS-enabled images receive Mesa 26.1 updates and newer firmware packages backported from Debian Sid, helping provide support for more recent graphics hardware.

Refreshed MX Utilities

MX Welcome, MX Tools, and the custom toolbox used by the Fluxbox edition receive interface updates and other refinements.

Linux Kernel and Hardware Support

MX Linux 25.3 includes different kernel choices depending on the installation image. The standard editions prioritize the Debian kernel series, while the Xfce Advanced Hardware Support (AHS) image uses a Liquorix kernel intended for systems with newer hardware.

Edition or component What’s included
Most MX Linux 25.3 editions Linux 6.12.107 Debian kernel
Xfce AHS edition Liquorix Linux 7.2.6 kernel
AHS graphics stack Mesa 26.1.4 and newer firmware packages

Kernel and Mesa versions above are the versions listed in the MX Linux project’s 25.3 release announcement. Package availability can change through subsequent repository updates.

New and Updated MX Linux Tools

1. Verify ISO Sig

MX Linux 25.3 introduces Verify ISO Sig, a utility designed to make verification of downloaded ISO images easier. The tool is not limited to MX Linux images and can also verify images from several other Linux distribution families.

Verifying downloaded installation media is an important step before creating a bootable USB drive. It helps users check that the downloaded image matches the expected published integrity information.

2. MX-Theme-Colors

MX-Theme-Colors is another new utility that allows users to create custom GTK highlight-color variations based on existing MX themes. It gives desktop users more control over the appearance of their Linux environment.

3. MX Package Installer Improvements

The MX Package Installer receives updates to its Popular Apps section, including Siduction 7.x kernel options. Several third-party VPN installation choices have also been updated.

Installation and Filesystem Changes

For new installations, the MX/Gazelle installer enables the lazytime mount option in /etc/fstab by default. This option changes how filesystem timestamp updates are handled, potentially reducing some timestamp-write activity.

Users should still review their storage, application, and workload requirements before changing filesystem mount options manually.

Available MX Linux 25.3 Editions

The refreshed release images are available in the following editions:

  • Xfce: A lightweight, traditional desktop environment.
  • KDE Plasma: A customizable desktop with a feature-rich interface.
  • Fluxbox: A lightweight window-manager-based desktop.
  • Xfce AHS: An Advanced Hardware Support image intended for newer hardware.

An updated MX Linux 25.3 Raspberry Pi respin is also available. However, automatic filesystem expansion on first boot has been removed from this respin because the previously used methods became unreliable. Raspberry Pi users are advised to resize the filesystem manually with raspi-config after the first boot.

How to Get MX Linux 25.3

Download the edition that best fits your computer from the official MX Linux website. Use the project’s official download mirrors rather than unofficial ISO sources.

Before installing, back up important files and confirm that the selected image matches your hardware and installation requirements. For added confidence, verify the downloaded ISO using the official integrity information and signature-verification instructions.

Do Existing MX Linux Users Need to Reinstall?

No. According to the MX Linux project, users who already have MX Linux 25 installed can receive the relevant updates through the normal package update channels. The refreshed 25.3 ISO images are primarily useful for new installations.

If you maintain a production workstation or a system used for important tasks, back up your data before performing major package updates and review any release-specific guidance relevant to your hardware.

Should You Upgrade to MX Linux 25.3?

MX Linux 25.3 is worth considering if you are planning a new MX Linux installation and want updated Debian-based installation media, refreshed MX tools, and current packages from the project’s repositories. The Xfce AHS image is particularly relevant to users who need its newer kernel and graphics stack for compatible hardware.

For existing MX Linux 25 users, a complete reinstall is generally unnecessary simply to obtain these updates. Keeping the system updated through the official repositories is the recommended approach.
