Wine 11.8 is now available as the latest release of the open-source compatibility layer that enables running Windows applications and games on Linux, macOS, and other Unix-like systems.
One of the key updates in this version is the upgrade of Wine Mono to 11.1, improving support for .NET-based applications. Wine Mono acts as a replacement for Microsoft’s .NET Framework within Wine, allowing managed-code applications to run more reliably.
The release also continues work on reimplementing MSXML without relying on libxml2. By enhancing its built-in MSXML components, Wine aims to reduce external dependencies while better matching expected Windows behavior.
Keyboard handling sees improvement as well, thanks to better integration with XKB via XKBRegistry. This allows Wine to more accurately map host keyboard layouts to those expected by Windows applications.
Another area of focus is VBScript compatibility. VBScript support has been extended to cover features like ExecuteGlobal, Eval, GetRef, single-line If statements, and improved object dispatch behavior—important for legacy apps, installers, and enterprise tools.
Wine 11.8 fixes 22 bugs, including issues affecting Microsoft Visio 2013 installation with MSXML6, startup crashes in Altium Designer versions 18–20, launch failures in PLSQL Developer on Wine 11.7, crashes in ExamDiff Pro, and file access problems in apps packaged with Enigma Virtual Box.
Gaming-related fixes are also included, addressing crashes and compatibility issues in titles such as Microsoft Golf 99, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Lockdown, Petka, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
