About Proxmox VE 9.1

Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE) is a complete, open-source platform for server virtualization. It combines the KVM hypervisor and LXC containers with software-defined storage and networking, high availability clustering and a web-based management console, all on a Debian Linux base.

Proxmox describes version 9.1 as the first point release since the major 9.0 update and as a release dedicated to refinement. It is based on Debian 13.2 “Trixie” and uses the newer Linux kernel 6.17.2 as its stable default. The ISO is named 9.1-1, which many users write as 9.1.1.

It is a popular free alternative to commercial hypervisors for home labs, small businesses and training environments. Our software downloads section lists more virtualization and infrastructure tools.

System Requirements

ComponentTypical guidance
CPU64-bit Intel or AMD processor with virtualization support (Intel VT-x or AMD-V) enabled in the BIOS
MemoryAt least 2 GB for the host, plus the memory your VMs and containers need
StorageSSD recommended; more disks if you use ZFS or Ceph
NetworkAt least one Gigabit network card
USB driveA USB flash drive to create the installer

Needs grow with your workloads. Check the official Proxmox VE documentation for current recommendations.

Installation Guide

  1. Download the ISO and verify its checksum.
  2. Write the ISO to a USB drive with a tool such as Rufus or balenaEtcher. This erases the drive.
  3. Enable virtualization in the BIOS, then boot the server from the USB drive.
  4. Choose Install Proxmox VE (Graphical), accept the license and select the target disk and file system.
  5. Set your country and time zone, a root password, an email address and the network settings (a static IP and hostname).
  6. Finish the installation and reboot. Remove the USB drive.
  7. From another computer, open https://SERVER-IP:8006 and sign in as root.

After installing

Without a subscription, switch from the enterprise repository to the no-subscription repository so updates work, then run apt update and apt full-upgrade. Plan backups early: see our Veeam Backup & Replication 13.1.1 download, which includes the Veeam Plugin for Proxmox VE, and our Veeam guides.

Upgrading to Proxmox VE 9.1

  • From 9.0: upgrade with apt or the web interface. Proxmox recommends the enterprise repository for the most stable experience.
  • From 8.x: follow the official Upgrade from 8 to 9 guide. Proxmox VE 8.4 security support ran until August 2026.
  • Ceph Reef clusters: upgrade Ceph to Squid first, then Proxmox VE.

Always back up your VMs and configuration before a major upgrade.
