Microsoft System Center
System Center is Microsoft’s suite for managing and protecting datacenters. The 2025 release has five products for virtualization, monitoring, backup, automation and IT service management, and it supports Windows Server 2025 from day one.
About Microsoft System Center 2025
Microsoft System Center is a family of server products for running and protecting on-premises and hybrid infrastructure. System Center 2025 is a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release, delivered together with Windows Server 2025 so that all of its management tools can support the new operating system from the start.
It includes five products, and each one covers a different job in the datacenter. Pick only the ones that you need, because they are installed and licensed as separate components.
| Product | Purpose |
|---|---|
| SCVMM (Virtual Machine Manager) | Manage Hyper-V hosts, clusters, virtual machines and fabric |
| SCOM (Operations Manager) | Monitor servers, applications and services, with alerts and reports |
| SCDPM (Data Protection Manager) | Back up and restore servers, applications and virtual machines |
| SCO (Orchestrator) | Automate IT processes with runbooks |
| SCSM (Service Manager) | IT service management: incidents, changes and a configuration database |

Installation Guide
- Download only the products you need and check that each file size matches the table above.
- Prepare a domain-joined Windows Server and a SQL Server instance for each product, ideally on separate servers.
- Create the service accounts and security groups that the product requires.
- Extract the ZIP file and run the setup as administrator. Install the prerequisites when the wizard asks for them.
- Complete the wizard, then install the latest Update Rollup for that product.
- Connect the products to each other, for example by integrating Orchestrator with Service Manager.
Recommended order
Start with the product that matches your first goal. Many teams deploy SCVMM for virtualization, then SCOM for monitoring, then DPM for backup, and add SCO and SCSM when they need automation and service management. Test every deployment in a lab first.
