About Microsoft System Center 2025

Microsoft System Center is a family of server products for running and protecting on-premises and hybrid infrastructure. System Center 2025 is a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release, delivered together with Windows Server 2025 so that all of its management tools can support the new operating system from the start.

It includes five products, and each one covers a different job in the datacenter. Pick only the ones that you need, because they are installed and licensed as separate components.

ProductPurpose
SCVMM (Virtual Machine Manager)Manage Hyper-V hosts, clusters, virtual machines and fabric
SCOM (Operations Manager)Monitor servers, applications and services, with alerts and reports
SCDPM (Data Protection Manager)Back up and restore servers, applications and virtual machines
SCO (Orchestrator)Automate IT processes with runbooks
SCSM (Service Manager)IT service management: incidents, changes and a configuration database

Note: Configuration Manager (SCCM) is released separately and is not part of the five products on this page.

Key Features

🖥️

SCVMM and Azure Arc

📈

SCOM Monitoring

Monitor Azure Stack HCI 23H2 clusters, and newer Linux distributions after Update Rollup 1.

💾

DPM Backup Options

Store passphrases in Azure Key Vault, protect SharePoint Subscription Edition and exclude disks from Hyper-V backups (UR1).

⚙️

Orchestrator Automation

Support for group Managed Service Accounts (gMSA) and OLE DB 19.

🎫

Service Manager ITSM

Incident, change and CMDB features, with improved Orchestrator integration in UR1.

🔒

Security Improvements

Less reliance on CredSSP and NTLM, plus TLS 1.3 and SQL Server 2025 support in UR1.

Removed features: Microsoft removed Azure Profiles and the Service Provider Foundation (SPF) from VMM in this release, since Azure Arc covers those scenarios.

Installation Guide

  1. Download only the products you need and check that each file size matches the table above.
  2. Prepare a domain-joined Windows Server and a SQL Server instance for each product, ideally on separate servers.
  3. Create the service accounts and security groups that the product requires.
  4. Extract the ZIP file and run the setup as administrator. Install the prerequisites when the wizard asks for them.
  5. Complete the wizard, then install the latest Update Rollup for that product.

Recommended order

Start with the product that matches your first goal. Many teams deploy SCVMM for virtualization, then SCOM for monitoring, then DPM for backup, and add SCO and SCSM when they need automation and service management. Test every deployment in a lab first.
