Windows Server · Software Download · Microsoft Evaluation Media

Windows Server 2022 ISO is the installation image used to install Microsoft’s server operating system on a physical computer or virtual machine. IT professionals use it to build Active Directory domain controllers, DNS and DHCP servers, file servers, Hyper-V environments, and Windows Server practice labs.

Microsoft provides a Windows Server 2022 evaluation download through its official Evaluation Center. This gives administrators and learners a legitimate way to evaluate the operating system, test server roles, and prepare a lab before deciding on a production deployment.

What is Windows Server 2022?

Windows Server 2022 is Microsoft’s server operating system for running infrastructure services, enterprise applications, storage, virtualization, and hybrid workloads. It is used in on-premises datacenters, small-business networks, enterprise environments, and virtual labs.

Its capabilities include security improvements, integration with Azure hybrid management, and enhancements to the Windows Server application platform. The features available in a deployment depend on the edition, configuration, hardware, and licensing arrangement.

For technical details, consult the official Windows Server documentation.

How to Download Windows Server 2022 ISO

Step 1: Open the official Microsoft page

Visit the Windows Server 2022 download page. Check that the address belongs to Microsoft before submitting any registration details.

Step 2: Select the ISO download

Choose the ISO option if you need a bootable installation image. Microsoft also lists a VHD option for supported virtual-machine workflows; the ISO is the usual choice when you want to boot a VM from installation media or create physical installation media.

Step 3: Choose the language and complete registration

Follow Microsoft’s on-page instructions to select a language and complete any required registration. The exact page layout and available download choices may change over time.

Step 4: Save the ISO file

Save the downloaded file to a known location. If you maintain a virtual lab, keep a record of the source and version so you can distinguish the original image from any updated installation media.

Download safety: Avoid unofficial download sites that bundle utilities, provide password-protected archives, or offer modified ISO images. Use Microsoft’s official download and verify the image when Microsoft provides checksum or signature information.

Windows Server 2022 Standard vs. Datacenter

The evaluation ISO offers the Standard and Datacenter editions. Select an edition based on the server roles, virtualization requirements, and features you intend to evaluate.

EditionTypical useWhat to consider
StandardGeneral server workloads and limited virtualization scenarios.Review the edition’s virtualization rights and licensing requirements for your intended deployment.
DatacenterHighly virtualized environments and advanced datacenter scenarios.Includes additional datacenter features, including capabilities such as Storage Spaces Direct and Software-Defined Networking. Verify requirements in Microsoft’s documentation.

For a production server, do not select an edition solely because it is available in the evaluation download. Confirm the edition, licensing, virtualization rights, and workload requirements with Microsoft’s official documentation and licensing guidance.

Server Core vs. Desktop Experience

The installation wizard also asks you to choose an installation option supported by the media.

Server Core

Server Core provides a smaller installation without the traditional full graphical desktop. It is managed through PowerShell, SConfig, Windows Admin Center, and other remote administration tools. It is suitable for administrators who are comfortable with command-line and remote management.

Server with Desktop Experience

Desktop Experience includes the traditional graphical interface and local graphical management tools. It can be more approachable for learning, lab exercises, and workloads that require a GUI.

Important: Microsoft documents that you cannot convert between Server Core and Server with Desktop Experience after installation through a simple feature switch. If you need a different installation option, plan for a clean installation.

For further installation guidance, see Microsoft’s Windows Server getting-started documentation.

Evaluation Period and Activation Requirements

Microsoft’s Evaluation Center states that the Windows Server 2022 evaluation expires after 180 days. The evaluation version must activate over the internet within the first 10 days to avoid automatic shutdown.

Evaluation media is intended for evaluation and testing. It should not be treated as a permanent production licence. Microsoft provides instructions for converting eligible evaluation installations to retail editions, subject to its applicable conditions and licensing requirements.

Before deploying the operating system for business-critical workloads, review the current terms on the official download page and confirm the appropriate licensing arrangement.
