AerynOS, an atomic-update-focused Linux distribution still in its alpha stage, has published its April 2026 progress report alongside a new Alpha ISO, AerynOS 2026.05, powered by Linux kernel 7.0.
Previously known as Serpent OS, the project has now fully transitioned to its new AerynOS branding across both the system and its website. This includes a refreshed visual identity with a triquetra-inspired logo and a green-and-orange color scheme.
The visual refresh carries into the desktop experience. New wallpapers—featuring photography by community contributor Gabriel Janich—have been added, with seven images selected overall. Two are set as defaults for the GNOME and COSMIC editions, while KDE Plasma still awaits further visual tuning.

On the tooling side, several improvements have been introduced. The Boulder build system now includes cache management commands for inspecting and cleaning stored data, and its recipe update function has been enhanced with integration for the ent tool. Meanwhile, Moss, the system and package manager, now removes states more quickly and displays a progress bar. Its search functionality has also been refined with better grouping, highlighted matches, and support for provider-style queries.
Development is ongoing for Versioned Repositories, with the next phase aiming to make self-updates in Moss smoother. This should allow future changes to repository structures and package formats without leaving users stuck on outdated tooling.

The release also updates a wide range of core software. Highlights include GNOME 50.1, KDE Plasma 6.6.4, KDE Gear 26.04, KDE Frameworks 6.25, COSMIC 1.0.11, Mesa 26.0.6, PipeWire 1.6.4, QEMU 11.0, Docker 29.4.1, Firefox 150, Thunderbird 150, Rust 1.95, LLVM 22.1.4, Wine 11.7, and the Zed 1.0 editor.
A notable change is the Python upgrade from version 3.11 to 3.14.4, which reportedly required only minimal adjustments thanks to the project’s relatively small Python package ecosystem.
Kernel options have also expanded. Users can now choose between:
However, switching between kernels—especially away from the stable option is not yet fully seamless.

The AerynOS 2026.05 ISO remains a live GNOME environment showcasing the Rust-based Lichen installer. Interestingly, the installer now recommends KDE Plasma as the preferred desktop environment, marking a shift in direction.
Installation still requires an internet connection to fetch the latest packages. Additionally, the project notes that Ventoy is currently incompatible with AerynOS ISOs (a bug report has been filed), so users should rely on alternatives like Etcher, dd, or GNOME Disks for installation.
