Official VMware Visio Stencils & Icons for 2026

Official VMware Visio Stencils & Icons for 2026

For years, one of the biggest frustrations in documenting VMware environments has been the lack of an official, comprehensive set of VMware Visio stencils. While a few unofficial icon packs and scattered product diagrams have circulated online, there has never been a complete, centrally maintained collection covering VMware’s full portfolio for use in Visio, Draw.io, OmniGraffle, or similar tools.

As a User Moderator on the official VMware Technology Network (VMTN) forums, I regularly review discussions from architects and engineers facing the same challenge: how to create clean, professional design documentation using accurate VMware icons.

During one of those reviews, I came across a valuable post by Ryan Johnson, who shared a collection of Visio icons and shapes. What makes this collection particularly useful is that these are the same icons used in official VMware Validated Design (VVD) documentation, giving diagrams a more authentic and professional look aligned with VMware’s own published designs.

Update on Availability

The original GitHub repository is no longer available. However, a fork maintained by Christian Mohn now hosts the files (many thanks to him for preserving the resource).

What’s Included?

The stencil set is primarily focused on Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) components, including:

  • Compute resources (ESXi hosts, clusters, vCenter, etc.)
  • Networking components (NSX, distributed switches, edge services)
  • Storage systems (vSAN and related storage elements)
  • Core SDDC building blocks

These stencils are especially useful for architects designing vSphere, NSX, vSAN, and Cloud Foundation environments.

Important Notes

  • The files are a few years old and may not reflect the newest VMware (or Broadcom-branded) product naming or branding updates.
  • Despite their age, they remain the most complete and practical set of VMware stencils publicly available.
  • They are still perfectly suitable for technical documentation, architecture diagrams, training materials, and presentations.

How to Download

The files were moved from the VMTN forums to GitHub.

To download them:

  1. Navigate to the GitHub repository.
  2. Click the Code button.
  3. Select Download ZIP.

Although these stencils are not officially updated, they remain one of the best resources available for creating professional VMware infrastructure diagrams.

If you regularly design SDDC, vSphere, NSX, or VMware Cloud environments, this collection is definitely worth adding to your toolkit.
