1,386

Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) 8.4, released on April 9, 2025, introduces several significant enhancements aimed at improving virtualization performance, flexibility, and integration capabilities.

Key Features of Proxmox VE 8.4

Live Migration with Mediated Devices (vGPU Support)

Proxmox VE 8.4 enables live migration of virtual machines (VMs) utilizing mediated devices, such as NVIDIA virtual GPUs (vGPUs). This advancement allows for the seamless transfer of GPU-accelerated workloads between cluster nodes without downtime, provided that both source and destination nodes have compatible hardware and drivers. The introduction of the pve-nvidia-vgpu-helper tool simplifies the setup of NVIDIA vGPU drivers.

API Integration for Third-Party Backup Solutions

A new API facilitates the integration of external backup tools directly into the Proxmox ecosystem. This feature allows third-party solutions, such as Veeam and Rubrik, to interact natively with Proxmox VE’s backup and restore functionalities, enhancing efficiency and manageability.

Virtiofs Directory Passthrough

The addition of virtiofs support allows for direct sharing of files and directories between the host and its VMs, bypassing the need for traditional network file systems. This results in improved performance and reduced overhead. Modern Linux guests support virtiofs natively, while Windows guests require additional configuration.

Updated Core Components

Proxmox VE 8.4 is built upon Debian 12.10 (“Bookworm”) and includes the following updated components:

  • Linux Kernel 6.8.12 (default) and 6.14 (optional)
  • QEMU 9.2.0
  • LXC 6.0.0
  • ZFS 2.2.7 with compatibility patches for kernel 6.14
  • Ceph Squid 19.2.1 as a stable storage backend.

Enhanced Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Installer Improvements

Enhancements to the SDN stack provide more robust networking capabilities, while updates to the ISO installer offer additional configuration options and stricter password requirements, improving the overall installation experience.

📥 Installation and Upgrade

Proxmox VE 8.4 is available for download as an ISO image suitable for bare-metal installations. Existing Proxmox VE installations can be upgraded to version 8.4 using the apt package manager. Additionally, Proxmox VE 8.4 can be installed on top of a Debian 12.10 (“Bookworm”) setup.
