Windows Admin Center has long been a favorite tool for IT pros, trusted to manage millions of Windows Servers around the world. Over the years, Windows Admin Center’s browser-based console has made every day server administration easier and more accessible. Now, responding directly to your feedback and evolving needs, we are introducing a new Virtualization Mode (vMode) in the latest Windows Admin Center Public Preview. vMode is a purpose-built experience to help you easily manage on-premises Windows Server Hyper-V virtualization at scale – across multiple hosts and clusters – while effortlessly bridging your environment with Azure Arc for a true hybrid cloud experience.

In this blog post, we’ll explore what Virtualization Mode is all about, why it was created, and how it empowers IT administrators to oversee their entire virtualization estate with greater simplicity. We’ll highlight the capabilities of vMode, discuss how it connects your Hyper-V infrastructure to Azure for hybrid adaptability, share why this update is such a big deal for Windows Server customers, and provide our roadmap for what comes next.

Why a new virtualization mode?

Since its launch, Windows Admin Center has gained widespread popularity thanks to its extensible, server-focused design. It equips IT professionals with the tools and insights needed to manage everything from Active Directory controllers to virtualization hosts and more. This approach—now referred to as Administration Mode—adapts to each server’s unique configuration, delivering tailored insights and controls that make it ideal for everyday management tasks.

However, based on your feedback, it became clear that administrators working with more complex Hyper-V environments needed a more specialized solution. Managing large-scale, on-premises virtualization setups—with multiple hosts, clusters, and advanced storage and networking configurations—called for a dedicated experience.

We listened, and the result is Windows Admin Center: Virtualization Mode, or vMode. This new capability is purpose-built for virtualization management, offering a centralized console to oversee Hyper-V hosts, clusters, virtual machines, storage, and virtual networks—all from a single interface. At the same time, it preserves the simplicity Windows Admin Center is known for, while integrating with Azure Arc to support a flexible, hybrid cloud approach.

Meet vMode public preview: purpose built management for Hyper-V

When you setup Windows Admin Center Public Preview, you’ll have two separate installation options: the traditional Administrator mode (aMode) or the new Virtualization mode (vMode). At its core, Virtualization Mode (vMode) is about centralizing and streamlining Hyper-V management. Instead of connecting to each server or cluster individually, you can now deploy Windows Admin Center as a stateful appliance and manage your Hyper-V virtualization fabric from a single dashboard. Here are some of the key capabilities and design features that make vMode a game-changer:

  • Scalable, multi-host management: vMode has been designed for large environments, allowing a single Windows Admin Center system to manage up to hundreds of Hyper-V hosts or tens of thousands of virtual machines. You can onboard both standalone servers and multiple clusters, viewing all VMs and hosts in one unified console without switching between tabs or sessions.
  • Unified inventory and dashboard: The Virtual Machines tool in vMode offers a single view of all VMs, displaying their status, host, OS, and resource use. Use global search to quickly locate any VM, host, cluster, or storage object by name. The dashboard highlights key stats like active VMs, cluster health, and CPU/memory usage for an instant overview.
  • Appliance-style deployment: vMode is designed for easy, “appliance-like” setup. Simply install Windows Admin Center on your management server (such as Windows Server 2022/2025), enable Virtualization Mode, and finish deployment in under 10 minutes. The system automatically sets up a lightweight PostgreSQL database to track VM/host inventory and status, so admins don’t need to manage it manually—it’s included with the WAC gateway service. This creates a central Windows Admin Center instance accessible by your entire team.
  • Bulk actions and simplified workflows: vMode lets you manage multiple resources efficiently with bulk operations and streamlined workflows. The Windows Admin Center UI supports live migrations between cluster nodes, and new wizards help with tasks like importing VMs or replicating VMs between hosts or clusters easily.
  • Virtualization-focused UI & tools: In vMode, Windows Admin Center displays only virtualization-related tools, such as VM management, virtual networks, Hyper-V settings, and Storage Spaces Direct. This streamlined interface helps admins focus efficiently. Hosts can be organized into logical groups, simplifying navigation as your environment expands.
  • Performance and responsiveness: Managing thousands of VMs could be overwhelming, but vMode brings significant performance optimizations to make it snappy. The Windows Admin Center team reworked how data is loaded: the VM list and host statuses populate quickly and are quickly retrieved from the database maintaining persistent state.
Simplifying Hyper-V Management with Windows Admin Center vMode

To sum up, with vMode, you get a unified view, bulk management powers, and a UI tuned to virtualization needs – all without losing the simplicity that made Windows Admin Center popular.

Hybrid-Ready: Azure Arc integration for adaptive cloud management

One of Windows Admin Center’s greatest strengths has always been its ability to bridge on-premises environments with Azure services—the essence of a hybrid approach. With the introduction of Virtualization Mode (vMode), this capability is taken even further, making integration with Azure Arc more seamless and powerful for managing virtualized applications.

So, what exactly is Azure Arc? In simple terms, it’s a Microsoft solution that connects your on-premises or multi-cloud resources to Azure, allowing them to be treated as native Azure resources for management. This unlocks access to a range of cloud-native tools—such as Azure Monitor, Azure Update Management, and Microsoft Defender for Cloud—even for systems running outside of Azure. It plays a central role in enabling a unified hybrid cloud strategy.

Within vMode, Azure Arc integration allows you to easily Arc-enable your Hyper-V virtual machines with just a few clicks. Once connected, you can extend your management capabilities through Azure:

  • Unified cloud management (adaptive cloud): After onboarding your on-premises assets with Azure Arc, they become visible in the Azure portal, enabling centralized management alongside native Azure resources. You can monitor VMs using Azure Monitor, enforce compliance with Azure Policy, and still manage VM configurations and migrations locally through Windows Admin Center vMode. This hybrid model lets you keep critical workloads on-premises while leveraging Azure for backup, monitoring, and governance—without added complexity.

Real-world example: Imagine running a Hyper-V cluster that hosts several business-critical applications. With Windows Admin Center vMode, you can efficiently organize and monitor your virtual machines. By enabling Azure Arc, you can take advantage of Azure Backup for offsite protection and use Azure Update Management to automate patching directly from the Azure portal. Your workloads remain on-premises, but management becomes unified across environments.

In short, Azure Arc integration in vMode transforms your on-premises Hyper-V deployment into a fully realized hybrid cloud solution, combining local control with the scalability and intelligence of Azure.

No additional cost, no additional complexity

Windows Admin Center—including Virtualization Mode (vMode)—comes at no additional cost with both Windows Server Datacenter and Standard licenses. There’s no separate SKU or extra licensing required to use Windows Admin Center or its virtualization capabilities. Compared to many other virtualization management platforms that introduce added fees, this makes Hyper-V paired with Windows Admin Center a highly cost-effective solution. By including advanced functionality like vMode in a free tool, Microsoft helps organizations significantly reduce their total cost of ownership.

The public preview of Windows Admin Center vMode has been shaped by strong community involvement, incorporating feedback from users, partners, and Insider programs. Development is ongoing, with continued updates planned through the Windows Admin Center extension feed and future releases. For example, a new VM conversion extension—currently in Public Preview—enables direct migration from VMware to Hyper-V within Windows Admin Center. Thanks to its modular architecture, Windows Admin Center will continue to expand, with more extensions expected to integrate seamlessly with vMode over time.
