Tails 7.7.3 Emergency Release Fixes Dirty Frag Vulnerability

Tails 7.7.3 has been released as an emergency security update for the privacy-oriented Linux distribution, fixing the critical Dirty Frag vulnerability affecting the Linux kernel.

With this release, Tails upgrades the Linux kernel to version 6.12.86, which contains the fix for Dirty Frag. The Tails developers warn that if an attacker had already compromised a separate vulnerability within a Tails application, the kernel flaw could potentially be leveraged to take complete control of the system and compromise the user’s anonymity.

The update also delivers security-focused refreshes for several core components. Tor Browser 15.0.12 is now included, alongside Tor 0.4.9.8 and Thunderbird 140.10.1.

Users seeking detailed technical information can consult the changelog and official release announcement for a complete breakdown of the included fixes and updates.

Tails 7.7.3 is distributed as an automatic upgrade for systems already running Tails 7.0 or newer. However, users who experience problems during the automatic update process, or whose systems fail to boot afterward, are advised to carry out a manual upgrade instead.

The project also provides updated USB and ISO installation images for new installations. Existing users are encouraged to upgrade their current Tails USB installation rather than reinstalling from scratch, since installing Tails 7.7.3 onto the same USB drive would erase any existing Persistent Storage data.
