It performs bi-directional conversion between VMDK, VHD/VHDX (with Windows Repair Mode support), QCOW2, and StarWind’s native IMG format, and it works on a copy of your VM so the original file stays untouched during conversion.
Can StarWind convert VMware to VirtualBox?
Not directly to VirtualBox’s native VDI format — StarWind V2V Converter’s supported outputs are VMDK,
VHD/VHDX, QCOW2, and StarWind IMG. In practice this still gets you there two ways: VirtualBox can attach
a VMDK disk directly without any conversion, or you can convert to VMDK with V2V Converter and then run
VirtualBox’s own VBoxManage clonehd
command to produce a VDI file.
Are symbols in a password a problem on StarWind P2V?
It can be, depending on the character. Remote-connection tools that authenticate against a source machine (which is what P2V migration relies on) can sometimes misinterpret credentials containing quotes, backslashes, or percent signs. If a P2V job fails at the connection or authentication step, temporarily switching the source machine’s password to a straightforward alphanumeric one is a quick way to rule this out before digging into networking or permissions issues.
Can I copy starwind.cfg from a trial install to a free license install?
Not while both licenses are on the same installation — StarWind blocks applying a Free license on top of a
Trial license, so simply re-running the installer or swapping the license key in place won’t work.
StarWind’s own support team’s documented workaround is to back up the starwind.cfg
file (and the VSAN headers) before reinstalling the OS and StarWind VSAN as a fresh Free-license install,
then restore that backed-up config afterward — done one node at a time on an HA pair to avoid downtime.
