COSMIC Desktop 1.0.12 Brings More Desktop Polish

System76 has rolled out COSMIC Desktop 1.0.12, a minor maintenance update for its Rust-based desktop environment. This version bumps the required Rust compiler to 1.93 and refreshes multiple dependencies across the COSMIC ecosystem.

One key improvement is in the compositor, which now uses an updated Smithay stack to fix drag-and-drop issues. It also includes a DPMS-related fix that enhances system resume behavior.

In COSMIC Files, network locations now display proper names, and handling of desktop entry fields has been refined. COSMIC Settings has been improved so wallpaper directory scanning correctly follows symbolic links. The update also resolves a crash (panic) affecting OpenRC systems running openrc-settingsd.

COSMIC Store now triggers a cache refresh whenever users manually check for updates, making update detection more consistent.

COSMIC Terminal gains a useful feature that lets users open new tabs in the current working directory. Additionally, resetting zoom now applies only to the active tab instead of the entire session.

COSMIC Edit introduces support for text box IME, while various COSMIC components receive updated translations and refreshed dependencies.

Packages for COSMIC Desktop 1.0.12 should soon reach rolling-release distributions like Arch, openSUSE Tumbleweed, and CachyOS. Meanwhile, users of Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS can already access the update.
