About Microsoft Exchange Server Subscription Edition

Microsoft Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) is Microsoft’s current on-premises Exchange Server platform. It provides enterprise messaging capabilities including email, calendars, contacts, mailbox services and collaboration features.

Exchange SE follows Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle approach and is designed to receive ongoing cumulative updates rather than following the traditional year-based Exchange Server naming model.

Microsoft describes Exchange SE as the successor to Exchange Server 2019. Exchange SE RTM is code-equivalent to Exchange Server 2019 CU15 apart from product, licensing and build-related changes.

Important: There is no Microsoft product officially named “Exchange Server 2025”. The current product name is Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE).

What’s New in Exchange Server SE?

  • Modern security configuration and Extended Protection.
  • TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 support with TLS 1.3 requiring Windows Server 2022 or Windows Server 2025.
  • Improved search architecture and reliability.
  • Support for modern hardware configurations.
  • Improved database caching and storage capabilities.
  • Modern authentication capabilities for supported on-premises scenarios.
  • Windows Server Core support.
  • Continued development through cumulative updates.

Exchange Server SE Architecture

Exchange SE uses a simplified server-role architecture centered around the Mailbox role and the Edge Transport role.

Mailbox Server

The Mailbox server provides mailbox databases, client access, transport services and other core Exchange services.

Edge Transport

The Edge Transport role can be deployed at the perimeter of an organization to handle Internet-facing mail flow and provide an additional layer of message-processing and security controls.

Exchange Server Subscription Edition System Requirements

Exchange Server SE has specific operating-system, Active Directory, software and hardware prerequisites. Always check the current Microsoft supportability documentation before deploying production Exchange infrastructure.

Component Requirement / Guidance
Operating System Supported Windows Server versions include Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025.
Architecture 64-bit server platform
Active Directory AD forest and domain requirements must be validated against the current Exchange SE prerequisites.
.NET Use the .NET version specified by the Exchange SE supportability documentation for the installed build.
Storage Use fast, reliable storage with capacity based on mailbox, database and log requirements.
Network Reliable network connectivity and correctly configured DNS, Active Directory and Exchange namespaces.
Administrator note: Exchange sizing is not a simple fixed-RAM or fixed-disk calculation. Mailbox count, database size, transaction logs, message traffic, client access and availability requirements should be considered when designing the server.

Exchange Server SE Editions

Microsoft provides two Exchange Server editions: Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition.

Edition Mounted Database Limit Typical Use
Standard Edition Up to 5 mounted databases Small and midsize deployments or non-mailbox roles in larger environments.
Enterprise Edition Up to 100 mounted databases Larger Exchange organizations requiring additional database capacity.

Exchange Server Subscription Edition Licensing

Exchange Server SE uses a subscription-based licensing model. Organizations should verify their Microsoft licensing entitlement before deploying the software in production.

Server Licensing

Microsoft documents Standard and Enterprise server editions. A server license must be assigned for each running instance according to the applicable licensing terms.

Client Access Licenses

Exchange SE also has Standard and Enterprise CAL options. The applicable CAL requirements depend on how users or devices access Exchange and which features are required.

Licensing warning: Exchange Server SE is commercial software. Downloading installation media does not by itself grant a production-use license. Verify your Microsoft licensing, subscription or Software Assurance entitlement before deployment.

Exchange Server SE Upgrade Paths

Microsoft supports a direct in-place upgrade from Exchange Server 2019 CU14 or CU15 to Exchange Server Subscription Edition.

  • Exchange Server 2019 CU14 → Exchange Server SE
  • Exchange Server 2019 CU15 → Exchange Server SE
  • Earlier Exchange versions require an appropriate supported upgrade or migration path.
  • Always validate coexistence and Active Directory requirements before beginning a production upgrade.

How to Install Exchange Server SE

Exchange deployment requires careful Active Directory preparation, operating-system prerequisites, DNS configuration, certificates, namespaces, firewall rules and appropriate service accounts and permissions.

Recommended Deployment Process

  1. Review the current Exchange Server SE supportability matrix.
  2. Confirm Windows Server and Active Directory compatibility.
  3. Install all required Windows Server prerequisites.
  4. Prepare Active Directory using the Exchange Setup tools.
  5. Verify DNS, certificates and Exchange namespaces.
  6. Install the Exchange Mailbox role.
  7. Apply the current supported Exchange Server updates.
  8. Configure receive/send connectors, virtual directories, authentication and mail flow.
  9. Validate mail flow and client connectivity.
  10. Configure monitoring, backup and recovery procedures.
Production recommendation: Do not deploy Exchange Server directly from an unverified ISO or third-party build. Validate the media, version, cryptographic hash, licensing entitlement and Microsoft supportability requirements before installation.
