Fedora 44 Release Delayed as Final Blocker Bugs Remain Open

Fedora Linux 44 was originally scheduled for release on April 14, but the launch has been delayed after the project declared the date a no-go. The new target is now set for the next release window on Tuesday, April 21.

The postponement comes due to unresolved final blocker bugs. According to Fedora’s blocker tracker, there are currently four confirmed blockers and two additional proposed ones for the Fedora 44 final milestone. Adam Williamson from Red Hat’s Fedora QA team explained that the Go/No-Go meeting was canceled because multiple critical issues remain unresolved, with no indication that they should be waived.

These blockers impact essential setup functionality rather than minor issues. Among them is a Mesa-related bug causing crashes during initial setup on NVIDIA hardware, along with three problems in the Plasma setup process affecting keyboard layout and Wi-Fi configuration.

In addition, the two proposed blockers are tied to kernel-related black screen issues when entering a LUKS password, including a case specific to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13. While some fixes are in progress, unresolved problems in key areas such as first-boot experience and encrypted system workflows have justified the delay.

Unless these issues are resolved sooner, April 21 remains the most realistic release date for Fedora Linux 44.

Looking ahead, Fedora 44 will bring several major updates, including new desktop environments such as GNOME 50 for Workstation, Plasma 6.6 with an updated setup flow and login manager for KDE, and Budgie 10.10 with Wayland support.

Other improvements include updates to the Anaconda installer, enhanced Live media handling with better aarch64 support on Windows on ARM devices, refreshed development toolchains, the addition of Nix to the repositories, and updated packages like MariaDB 11.8, Ansible 13, Helm 4, and Golang 1.26.
