KDE Plasma 6.8 to Enable Triple Buffering by Default for NVIDIA GPUs

Although KDE Plasma 6.8 is not expected to arrive until mid-October, development is progressing steadily, and several upcoming features have already been revealed.

One of the most significant improvements is that KWin will enable triple buffering by default for systems using NVIDIA graphics cards. According to KDE developer Xaver Hugl, the issues that previously prevented this feature from being enabled have now been resolved.

With triple buffering turned on, users can expect smoother desktop rendering and fewer visual stutters, particularly when the compositor cannot perfectly synchronize frame output with the display. This enhancement should provide a more responsive experience, especially for NVIDIA GPU users.

Plasma 6.8 will also introduce a new option for wallpaper slideshows. Instead of changing backgrounds automatically, users will be able to advance wallpapers manually through the desktop context menu or by assigning a global keyboard shortcut.

Additional refinements include support for an Esperanto keyboard layout in Plasma’s virtual keyboard and a refreshed Menu Editor featuring a simplified interface with fewer visual elements for a cleaner appearance.

The development team has also fixed a bug that could cause Plasma 6.8 to crash after an audio CD was ejected from Dolphin or Audex.

For more information about ongoing development, KDE regularly publishes updates in its “This Week in Plasma” blog series. In parallel with work on Plasma 6.8, developers continue improving the Plasma 6.7 branch. Version 6.7.1, which includes the first round of bug fixes, has already been released, while Plasma 6.7.2 is expected to follow shortly.
