Trinity Desktop R14.1.6 Adds Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Support

The Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE), a continuation of the classic KDE 3.5 desktop tailored for users who prefer a traditional interface without the resource demands of modern desktop environments, has released version 14.1.6. This marks the sixth maintenance update in the R14.1 series, offering a refreshed take on the early-2000s KDE experience for users in 2026.

In this release, Konqueror gains a new “Go to Desktop” option, KSnapshot now supports drag-and-drop for captured images, KCharSelect features improved navigation, and the Kicker panel introduces an optional 3D border style. Keyboard layout handling has also been enhanced, with KXKB adding broader compatibility and new currency symbol options. Additionally, tdeio_iso now supports xz archives, tdebase updates its search engine integrations, and the desktop includes refreshed TDE-themed icons and artwork.

Compatibility improvements are another highlight. TDE 14.1.6 adds support for newer Poppler releases, including version 26.04, integrates FFmpeg 8.0 support in akode, and brings binutils 2.46 compatibility to libr. The ktimemon applet in Kicker now also works on NetBSD systems.

The update resolves several bugs as well. It fixes a KDesktop startup crash, improves window tiling behavior in the Twin window manager, addresses multiple opacity-related issues, and enhances compton-tde startup so a reboot is no longer required after configuration changes.

Various applications have also been refined. KMail now properly verifies signatures in encrypted emails, KPDF receives fixes for crashes during session exit and fullscreen startup, KDF correctly handles drives larger than 2 TB, Ark improves date format detection, and TDM launches a more reliable D-Bus session using an improved Xsession script.

A couple of older features have been removed, including Twin’s option to apply translucency only to window decorations and the “Flying Konqi” wallpaper from tdeartwork.

On the distribution side, TDE 14.1.6 adds support for Debian’s loong64 architecture in Forky/Sid, drops packaging for Ubuntu 18.04 “Bionic,” and introduces support for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS “Resolute Raccoon.” Packages are available across a wide range of distributions, including Debian, Ubuntu, Devuan, Raspbian, Arch, RHEL/CentOS, Fedora, openSUSE, Mageia, and PCLinuxOS, with live images expected to follow.
