Just one week after the 1.0.5 release, COSMIC 1.0.6 has arrived. This is a small maintenance update focused on bug fixes and minor improvements across System76’s Rust-based desktop environment.

The applet status area now runs its own socket-activated daemon for StatusNotifierWatcher, along with additional stability fixes. The COSMIC compositor has been upgraded to a newer Smithay release, improving damage tracking and enabling support for the wl_fixes protocol for clients.

Cosmic Edit now supports drag-and-drop tabs. The Files app receives multiple improvements, including a fix for extracting password-protected ZIP files using the Enter key, new Move to and Copy to options in the context menu, and clipboard support for pasting images, videos, and text.

Additional refinements include disabling the Save button when no filename is entered and correcting display names for GVFS items.

The launcher now correctly loads MIME-type icons, notifications support file:// URLs in the app_icon field, and COSMIC Player automatically plays the next file in a playlist.

In Settings, shortcut input properly resets when canceling the replacement dialog. The Terminal introduces configurable hotkeys and hides the cursor while scrolling in unfocused terminals.

Finally, xdg-desktop-portal-cosmic now falls back to a default background from cosmic-wallpapers when necessary.

Packages for COSMIC 1.0.6 are expected to reach rolling-release distributions such as Arch Linux, openSUSE Tumbleweed, CachyOS, and others in the coming days.
